Flail are a duo from Finland that plays a depressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Dying Embers To Coldening Coals" which was released by Behest.
A very dark and haunting sound starts off the ep along with a small amount of synths a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. Vocals are mostly grim yet depressive black metal screams while the music also captures a very lo-fi atmosphere and most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while also going for more of a early to mid 2000's depressive style. Distorted sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the synths also adding in a touch of ambient when they make a brief return and all of the music also sticks to a slower direction.
Flail plays a style of depressive black metal that is very slow and lo-fi sounding as well as having its atmospheric moments. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Flail are a very great sounding depressive black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Carbon And Blood" and "Leaden Sights".8 out of 10.
