October Falls are a band from Finland that recently had music reviewed in this zine and on this recording moves away from the folk influenced style of atmospheric black metal from their previous releases and goes for more a neo-folk style and this is a review of their 2020 album "Syys" which will be released on Halloween by Purity Through Fire.
Field recordings and nature sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later which also brings elements of folk music onto the recording. Stringed instruments can also be heard at times while keyboards are also utilized on some of the tracks and all of the music is also instrumental.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while the acoustic guitars also add in a great amount of full chords. Finger picking can also be heard on some of the tracks along with all of the songs also sounding very different from each other and all of the music also sticks to a slower direction.
On this recording October Falls moves away from black metal to return back to the instrumental neo folk style that was presented on some of their earlier releases and the production also sounds very dark.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from October Falls and if you are a fan of neo-folk, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "I' "V" and "VIII". 8 out of 10.
