This is a review of a 4 way split album between Rage Of Devils, Everson Poe, Wyeth and the united Kingdom's Karnstein called "A Plague Upon Four Houses" which will be released in November by The Forest At Night and we will starts off the review with Rage Of Devils a solo project that plays a mixture of raw black metal and black'n'roll.
His side of the split starts out with night sounds along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
All of the drums are done on a real kit while growls can also be heard in certain sections of the recording. Elements of traditional rock can also be heard in the mid tempo sections of the songs along with the blast beats and tremolo picking also giving the music more of a raw feeling when it is utilized. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi and the lyrics cover the wrath of the devil.
In my opinion Rage Of Devils are a very great sounding mixture of raw black metal and black'n'roll and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Cage of Bone" and "Misty Hills".

Next up is Karnstein a band that plays a mixture of black, goth and doom metal.
Their side of the split starts out with night sounds along with some drum beats a few seconds later before going into a heavier musical direction. Elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
When keyboards are utilized they also give the music more of a symphonic and gothic feeling along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats. The songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as adding in some 90's influences, one of the songs is also an instrumental and guttural death metal growls can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very dark and old school while the lyrics cover gothic horror and vampirism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Karnstein and if you are a fan of black, goth and doom metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Vampire's Pain"and "Dance With Death".
Next up is Everson Poe a solo project that plays a mixture of black, sludge and doom metal.
His side of the split starts out with some acoustic guitars along with some tortured sounding spoken words parts and drum beats a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. Elements of sludge and doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the music and the deep vocals also add in a touch of black metal.
Melodies can also be heard in some of the riffing along with the solos and leads being done in a very dark yet melodic style. The vocals also add in a semi clean style briefly as well as a small amount of whispers, when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard and both of the tracks are very long and epic in length. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover gender identity and mental health issues.
In my opinion Everson Poe are a very great sounding mixture of black, sludge and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Temple Of The Black Egg".

Closing the split is Wyeth a solo project that plays a blackened form of American with some touches of free jazz and soul.
His side of the split starts out with some nature sounds and field recordings while the folk instruments also add in elements of American music. Spoken word parts can also be heard in the background along with the music also adding in a decent amount of dark soundscapes and synths which also adds in a blackened touch.
Vocals are done in a very rough yet semi clean blues rock style before adding in some grim screams along with some electric guitars also being used briefly. The songs also mix in some experimental, avant garde, free jazz and soul music elements and harmonicas can also be heard on the second track. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics cover the thoughts of an aging soul in the back country.
In my opinion Wyeth are a very great sounding blackened Americana solo project and if you are looking for something that is very original, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Cornfield".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and would recommend it to all fans of black metal that are into the more diverse sides of the genre. 8 out of 10.
Mae goes by they/she, I (Wyeth) go by she/her. Other than that, thank you so much for the support and the review!
ReplyDeleteHey, this is Everson Poe (aka Mae). Thanks for the review! Just wanted to let you know that I use neutral pronouns (they/them) and Wyeth uses feminine pronouns (she/her). Also, Rage Of Devils' drums aren't programmed! Aaron plays and records all live instrumentation. Oh, and the title is "A Plague Upon Four Houses", not horses. But seriously, thanks again for the review. So glad you enjoyed the split!
