Nocturnal Sorcery are a band from Finland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays an old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Captive In The Breath Of Life" which will be released in February by Kvlt.
A very dark sounding intro starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing and most of the music is heavily rooted in the classic Finnish style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while t he solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style when they are utilized. All of t he musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with a couple of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
Growls can also be heard at times as well as some dark soundscapes also being utilized on a couple of tracks which also gives the music more of a ritualistic touch along with a brief use of spoken word parts and most of the album also sticks to a heavier direction. The production sounds very dark and raw while t he lyrics cover Occultism, Luciferianism, Insanity and Darkness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Nocturnal Sorcery and if you are a fan of old school black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Oath At Mt. Hermon" "Beyond Salvation" and "Lucifer's Shade". 8 out of 10.
