Emperor where a band from Norway that is very well known in the metal world and are of the first atmospheric Norwegian black metal bands and this is a review of their 1997 album "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk" which was released by Century Black Records.
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a great amount of brutal sounding blast beats being thrown into the music, while the synths bring a very atmospheric and epic sound to the music with some classical music influences, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound to them.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast Norwegian style black metal riffs that utilized a great amount of dark sounding melodies in the riffing, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding guitar solos and leads that utilize a great amount of talent and skill.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams along with some clean singing and spoken word parts, while the lyrics cover dark themes moving away from the satanic and occult lyrics of the early material while still retaining elements, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound to it where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording along with a mixture of long and short songs.
In my opinion this was a great recording from Emperor and if you are a fan of this band, you probably already own this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Thus Spake The Nightspirit" "The Loss And Curse Of Reverence" "With Strength I Burn" and "In Longing Spirit". RECOMMENDED BUY.
