Votan are a band from Texas that plays an epic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "At One With The Serpent" which was released by Sepulchral Silence.
Atmospheric sounding synths start off the album and after the intro the music goes into more of a heavier and melodic direction along with a great portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard and after awhile black metal screams make their presence known.
Death metal growls can be heard in some parts and the songs and the music also brings in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the synths are also added in with the heavier sections of the songs and the guitar solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion and some of the faster riffing uses a decent amount of tremolo picking which gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling while most of the songs are very heavily influenced by the 90's and one track brings in clean singing and the last track is all instrumental and done on synths..
Votan plays a style of black metal that is very melodic and epic while also bringing in a very old school approach, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Aztec Mythology, Destruction, War, Ancient Times and Fantasy themes.
In my opinion Votan are a very great sounding epic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Scorn Through Malice" "Fallen Empire" and "Death Marched In the Nile". 8 out of 10.
