Thromdarr where a band from Finland that played where a part of the earlier black metal scene in Finland and this is a review of their 2022 demo compilation album "Midwinter Frost -Complete Demo Tapes 1990-1997" which was released by Svart Records and consists of the demos they released in the 90's era.
Dark yet heavy sounding riffing starts off the compilation along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams a few seconds later. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the riffs also add in a good amount of melody and some songs also add in a small amount of synths.
Death metal growls can also be heard at times while some of the riffing also shows some influences of the first wave era. Clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the compilation along with a couple of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and spoken word parts can also be heard on a few songs.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a r aw feeling. Most of the first demo that was presented on the first demo of the compilation showed more of a slow or mid paced direction and on the second demo presented the music brings in a more rawer early second wave style.
Some of the slower riffing also adds in touches of doom metal as well as some of the other demos also displaying more of an atmospheric feeling. Clear vocals can also be heard on a couple of songs and as the compilation progresses a small amount of guitar solos and leads are also utilized and they are done in more of a 90's melodic style.
The Necrobiosis demos on the compilation bring in more of an old school death metal and grindcore sound mixed in with more brutal blast beats and guttural growls. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover Satanism, Winter, Coldness, Fantasy, Paganism, Nature and Gore themes.
In my opinion Thromdarr where a very great sounding old school black metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Forest of The Black Diamonds" "Dragonmyrmidon" "As One With The Ice" and "Frozen As The Moon". 8 out of 10.
