Thulpis are a band from Greece that plays a very old school and Hellenic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "Dawn Of Defiance" which was released by Floga Records.
Spoken word samples start off the album before going into a heavier direction while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody and the songs also add in a lot of old school influences.
When the music speeds a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic 90's style when they are utilized.
Clear chants can also be heard in the background briefly and one of the tracks is also very long and epic in length and also introduces clean playing onto the album along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the classic Hellenic style. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover Dystopian themes.
In my opinion Thulpis are a very great sounding melodic and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Eternal Sleep Of Agony" "The Night That Wolves Where Silent" and "Enemy At The Gates". 8 out of 10.
