From Distant Hills are a duo from Greece that plays a folkloric and melancholic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2026 album ",,,And Whispering Trees" which was released by Purity Through Fire.
Wind sounds start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them and the vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling. Spoken words can also be heard on a couple of tracks, nature sounds are also used quite a bit throughout the album and at times the music also captures the aggression of the old school era of the genre.
From Distant Hills plays a style of black emtal that is very melancholic, melodic and aggressive sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover nature themes.
In my opinion From Distant Hills are a very great sounding melancholic black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Neverborn" "Stars Above The Northern Sky" and "Beyond The Kingdom Of Ancestral Winds". 8 out of 10.
