Novae are a band from the United States that plays a very raw, cosmic and dissonant form of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2025 album "Destroying Angels" which was released by Hypnotic Dirge Records.
Ambient style synths and drones start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs. Spoken words are also utilized on most of the tracks while one of the tracks is very long and epic in length along with the solos and leads also bringing in more of a dissonant style.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric and cosmic sounding while the guitars also take the album into more of a rawer direction while melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing and all of the songs stick to either stick to either a slow or mid tempo direction and avoid the use of any harsh vocals, the closing track is also an instrumental.
Novae plays a style of black metal that is very raw, dissonant, atmospheric and cosmic sounding as well ass adding in elements of ambient, noise and drone to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the song themes focus on the desolation and anxiety of empty space through the perspective of the Apollo 11 Mission.
In my opinion Novae are a very great sounding atmospheric, ambient, osmic, dissonant and raw black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Control Burn (Ethereal Void Horizon)" and "Tranquility (Plasma Sheath Blackout)". 8 out of 10.
