Aphrenous are a duo from the United States that plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of their self released album "Ravaged By The Incessant Scourge of Deception".
"Consecrating The Tyrant" starts off with dark ambient sounding synths which utilize a variety of many different keys staying in that direction for 3 minutes before the slow black metal guitar riffs make their way into the song while still retaining the ambient elements as well as mixing in some drum beats and melody in the guitars which leads to some clean singing vocals which also combine in some grim sounding black metal screams staying in that direction for a few minutes before a melodic post black metal guitar lead makes its way in the song and combining with the rhythm's and shortly after that the blast blast and fast, primitive black metal guitar riffs make their presence known while also slowing down at times before making returns to the faster elements.
"Weight Of A Thousand Hands" starts off with a brief black metal scream before the blast beats, fast, primitive black metal guitar riffs kick in also bring back the vocals and slowing down to a mid paced direction while still utilizing the faster elements and also mixing in slow sections and after a few minutes guitar leads start mixing with the rhythm's as well as adding in some melody as the song moves on the music gets soft with the synths and soundscapes kick in making the music go into a more dark ambient direction, a few minutes in the song acoustic guitars make their presence known while utilizing both finger picking and full chords and after awhile guitar solos start creeping in and combining with the acoustic guitars which sets up the pace for the pace for the return of the drums, slow and melodic guitar riffing and black metal vocals, a few minutes into the song you can actually hear the bass guitars for the first time on this album, around the 18 minute mark the faster element return to the song while still maintaining the slow and melodic parts which leads to deep death metal growls combining with the black metal screams towards the end of the song.
"Echoes Of Deception" starts off with some slow and melodic black metal guitar riffing with some ambient sounds in the background before into a softer and darker direction when the synths and soundscapes make their presence known with the focus being more on the soundscape elements which utilize a variety of many different sounds throughout the ten minutes of the song.
Lyrics on the album cover dark and hateful themes, while the production has a very dark, raw and primitive sound with the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Aphrenous are a very great sounding ambient black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Weight Of A Thousand Hands". RECOMMENDED BUY.
