This is a review of a split ep between New Zealand's Sul ad Astral and Isle Of Skye both bands that play post black metal with the ep being self released in 2013 and called "The Observant Darkness - The Darkness Observant" and we will start the review with Sul ad Astral .
"This Broken Ideal" starts off with ambient soundscapes which leads to some ambient black metal guitar riffs and drum beats before breaking into a melodic guitar lead which then moves into a heavy rhythm along with post rock melodies and clean singing and after awhile high pitched black metal screams make their presence known as well as some powerful playing and after awhile the song goes into a softer direction while retaining some of the heavier elements as well as returning to them and going into a more melodic post metal direction with the guitar leads as well as keeping the screams and clean singing and towards the end powerful bass playing creeps in.
Song lyrics cover betrayal and humanism, while the production has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on their side of the recording with the song being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Sul ad Astral are a very great sounding post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check up their side of the split. RECOMMENDED.
Next up is Isle Of Skye.
"On Fire" s tarts off with some heavy guitar riffing and drums along with some ambient sounds in the background which leads to the melodic clean singing, after that the music goes into a faster direction with death metal growls and high pitched black metal screams which starts combining with the cleaner vocals which in return takes the song back into a slower direction.
Song lyrics cover dark themes, while the production has a very strong and powerful sound with t he bass playing being mixed down low in the mix.
In my opinion Isle Of Skye are a very great sounding post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out t heir side of the split. RECOMMENDED.
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and if you are a fan of post black metal, you should add this ep to your collection. RECOMMENDED BUY.
