Wormlust are a 1 man band from Iceland that plays a very atmospheric form of black metal with ambient elements and this is a review of their 2012 compilation album "The Wormlust Collective" which was released by Murder Suicide Incidents.
"Svarthol" starts off with some sound effects which lead to some ambient elements and acoustic guitar playing which utilizes both finger picking and full chords, around the 3 minute mark the music gets darker and heavier switching from soft and heavy for a few seconds then the drum programming and whispered style black metal vocals kick in as well as sounding grimmer as the song moves on and the fast raw black metal riffs kick in as well as mixing in some slower parts into the song that have a very depressive feeling to them, around the 9 minute mark the song switches to dark ambient synths and nature sounds then heads into a slow doom metal riff along with some screams and when the drum programming kicks in the song starts adding in more black metal and drone elements before going into a very fast and primitive atmospheric riff for a few minutes until the clean parts make their presence known into the song while also combiningg the drum programming, vocals, slow and heavy parts and then the song closes with some semi fast riffing.
"Seven Paths" starts off with some dark ambient sound effects before the powerful drum programming, grim screams, heavy, fast and primitive black metal riffs kick in for a few minutes until the music slows down with a heavy bass line and then switches to clean playing and loud sound effects which maintains the drum programming while also adding in some depressive post rock sounds which leads to the music going back to being heavy and primitive again while also slowing down at times to add in some atmospheric elements before the switch back and forth to soft and heavy, around the 8 minute mark the music goes into a more melodic direction while retaining the heavy elements.
"The Opium Sleep" starts off with some quiet sound effects which get louder as the song moves on as well as mixing in some dark ambient synths which takes the song into a more evil and occult direction staying in the same direction until the end of the song with no other musical instruments or vocals being present.
Song lyrics are written in a mixture of their native tongue and English and they cover darkness and astral projection themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the album with the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Wormlust are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal project with elements of dark ambient and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Seven Paths". RECOMMENDED BUY.
