South Carolina's Vølus has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a dissonant mixture of war, black and death metal and this is a review of his 2023 ep "Avernus Emissary" which was released by Vargheist Records.
A very dark, heavy and brutal sound starts off the ep while you can also hear all of t he musical instruments that are present on the recording. Vocals are a mixture of grim black metal screams and cavernous death metal growls and the riffing also adds in a good amount of melody and dissonant structures.
Blast beats, tremolo picking and war metal elements can also be heard in t he faster sections of the songs which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one track also adding in a brief us e of synths.
On this recording Vølus moves away from t he more progressive and atmospheric style of his previous recording and creates more of a dissonant blackened death metal style which also captures the rawness and brutality of war metal. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover Occultism and Horror themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Vølus and if you are a fan of dissonant and blackened death metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Promethean Spiral" and "Avernus Emissary". 8 out of 10.
