Austere are a duo from Australia that plays a very atmospheric and depressive from of black metal with elements of blackgaze and this is a review of their 2024 album "Beneath The Threshold" which will be released in April by Lupus Lounge.
Clean playing starts off the album and also returns on some of the later songs before going into a heavier direction. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the vocals are mostly depressive sounding black metal screams and the riffs also add in a great amount of melody.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while clear vocals are also added into certain sections of the album. At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with some elements of shoegaze also being utilized quite a bit throughout the recording.
Keyboards are added added on some of the songs and all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction, one of the tracks is also an instrumental and when t he music finally speeds up on the closing song a small amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover heartache, depression, sadness, desolation and emotions.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Austere and if you are a fan of atmospheric and depressive black metal with elements of blackgaze, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Sunset Of Life" and "Severance". 8 out of 10.
“Faded Ghost” / “The Sunset Of Life” / “Cold Cerecloth”
