Grethor are a band from Virginia that plays a mixture of raw black metal and death metal and this is a review of their self released 2015 ep "Cloaked In Decay".
Dark sound effects start off the ep before going into more of a heavy and brutal blackened death metal direction that brings in both high pitched screams and brutal blast beats and the music can also be very technical at times along with a great mixture of slow, mid pace d and fast parts as well as some melodic riffing being utilized at times.
When solos and leads are utilized they are very dark and chaotic sounding and you can also hear some death metal growls being utilized in certain sections of the recording and as the ep progresses the music starts incorporating more melodic black metal elements and the whole ep sticks to a heavy direction and the last track brings in a small amount of clean singing.
Grethor plays a music style that takes the raw, avant garde and melodic sides of black metal and mixes it with brutal and technical death metal to create a sound of their own, the production sound s very powerful for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Existentialism and the writings of the writings of Robert W. Chambers.
In my opinion Grethor are a very great sounding mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wraith" and "Organic Tomb". 8 out of 10.
