Spire are a band from Australia that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a very progressive and psychedelic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Temple Of Khronos" which will be released in February by Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
A very dark sounding intro starts off the album while also introducing atmospheric and ambient style synths onto the recording which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music at times. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style and chants can also be heard in the background briefly.
When aggressive vocals are utilized they also add in a semi melodic style while also utilizing a good amount of grim black metal screams. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them.
At times the music also gets very progressive sounding along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a great amount of blast beats. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as some tracks also adding in growls, when tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the album more of a raw feeling and the music also has its psychedelic moments and as the recording progresses the black metal screams get more demented and high pitched sounding. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover space, nihilism, mysticism and mythological themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Spire and if you are a fan of atmospheric, progressive and psychedelic black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hymn I -Tyrant" and "Hymn V - Khronos". 8 out of 10.
