Upon The Altar are a band from Poland that plays a mixture of war, black and death metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Absis Ad Ordine Lumninous" which will be released in February by Putrid Cult.
A very fast, raw and brutal war metal sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while elements of death metal can also be heard at times and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet chaotic style. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with the songs also adding in a great amount of influences from the 90's era.
Evil sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with one of the tracks also adding in a brief use of apocalyptic sounding synths on a couple of songs as well as one song also being very long and epic in length and as the album progresses a brief use of Gregorian chants can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover cemeteries, ritual mutations and apocalyptic themes.
In my opinion Upon The Altar are a very great sounding mixture of war, black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Crown of Weakness" "Mortuus Est Rex" and "Hapax Legamenon". 8 out of 10.
