Poland's Varmia have returned with a new recording which continues the pagan style of black metal from previous releases and this is a review of their 2021 album "bal Lada" which will be released in March by M-Theory Audio.
A nature orientated intro starts off the album along with some drum beats a few seconds later which also takes the music into a heavier direction. Clean pagan vocals can also be heard in some parts of the recording while the songs also add in a great amount of high pitched black metal screams and melodies are also added into a lot of the riffing.
All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while the vocals also get very deep and grim sounding at times. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can also be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with a couple of the tracks also bringing in a small amount of flutes which also adds in touches of folk music as well as some of the songs also being very long and epic in length. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Polish and cover Slavic Paganism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Varmia and if you are a fan of pagan black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "bielmo" "nazachod" "glody" and "koniec". 8 out of 10.
