This is a review of a split album between Portugal's Penitência and Vapulah called "das Sombras Outrora Liz" which will be released in February by Signal Rex and we will start off the review with Penitência a duo that plays an avant garde form of black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some keyboards which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. All of their tracks are also very long and epic in length while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody along with the songs also mix in a lot of avant garde structures.
Vocals ar e mostly grim sounding black metal screams while all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as some clear vocals also being added into certain sections of the recording, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly and one song also adds in orchestration. The production sounds very professional and the lyrics are written in Portuguese and cover pain, hate and human decadence themes.
In my opinion Penitência are a very great sounding avant garde black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Concerto de Cinzas No.2 - Andamento 2 - Grito" and "Concerto de Cinzas No.2 - Andamento IV - Desmoronamento de Cinza".
Next up is Vapulah a duo that plays a martial style of black metal.
Their side of the split starts out with some spoken word parts b3efore going into a very fast, raw and melodic direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and the music is also very heavily rooted in the old school era.
Throughout their side of the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Female vocals and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them, synths and folk instruments are added on the closing track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Portuguese and cover Gnosticism, Occultism, Philosophy and Misanthropy themes.
In my opinion Vapulah are a very great sounding martial black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Illuminatio Divina" and "Sóphica Decadência".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of Portuguese black metal. 8 out of 10.
