Ultar are a band from Russia that had an album reviewed before in this zine when they where known of 'Deathknife' and this is a review of their 2016 album "Kadath" which was released by Temple Of Torturous.
A very distorted sounding drone starts off the album and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw feeling while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion.
Throughout the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and acoustic guitars can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and they also bring in elements of post rock and when solos and leads a re utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and one track is an ambient instrumental while the remaining songs return back to a heavier direction.
Ultar plays a style of post black metal that is very melodic and atmospheric while also having its raw moments, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are based upon the writings of H.P Lovecraft.
In my opinion Ultar are a very great sounding atmospheric post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Azathoth" and "Kadath". 8 out of 10.
