Ondskapt are a band from Sweden that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Grimoire Ordo Devus" which will be released on November 27th by Osmose Productions.
A very dark and ritualistic sounding intro starts off the album along with some chants and percussion's before going into a more heavier and melodic musical direction. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the classic Swedish style.
The ritualistic elements that where introduced on the intro also make a return on some of the later tracks along with the solos and leads also being done in a very dark yet melodic style. Clean singing and spoken word parts can also be heard on a couple of the songs as well as all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them.
Some of the later tracks also adds in a brief use of acoustic guitars as well as some choir vocals and operatic keyboards being added on the closing song. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Occultism, Left Hand Path, Black Magick, Demonology, Evilness, Dreams, Nightmares and Death themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Ondskapt and if you are a fan of melodic occult black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Semita Sinistram" "Animam Maalum Daemonium" "Paragon Belial" and "Excision". 8/5 out of 10.
