Italy's solo project Derhead havs returned with a new recording which continues the experimental and avant garde style of black metal from their previous releases while also mixing in some depressive elements and this is a review of his 2020 ep "Irrational I" which will be released on July 24th by Brucia Records.
Atmospheric sounding drones start off the ep before going into a heavier musical direction while the solos and leads are done in a very dark and melodic style. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.. Death metal growls can also be heard briefly along with both of the tracks being very long and epic in length as well as some clean playing also being utilized briefly.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the saxophones also giving the music more of an avant garde and experimental feeling when they are utilized, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover introspection and psychology themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Derhead and if you are a fan of experimental and avant garde depressive black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Corpses Of Desires". 8 out of 10.
