Ayr are a duo from North Carolina that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "The Dark" which will be released on July 24th as a joint effort between Wolves Of Hades and The Hell Command.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later while whispered vocals can also be heard briefly before going into a heavier direction. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while most of the tracks are very long and epic in length. At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the acoustic guitars also making a return on some of the songs. Synths can also be heard in some parts of the recording as well as a couple of the tracks also being ambient instrumentals. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Ayr are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Where All Light Dies" and "Sever The Golden Chain". 8 out of 10.
