Vanitas where a band from Ohio that played a mixture of black, sludge metal and hardcore and this is a review of their compilation album "Anthology" which was released by Metaphorest Records.
Dark yet heavy riffing starts off the compilation while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Vocals bring in a mixture of deep growls and high pitched screams and elements of screamo and hardcore can be heard in the mid tempo sections of the songs.
The slower sections of the songs also bring in the heaviness of sludge and doom metal while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the guitar leads also being done in a very distorted style, one of the tracks also adds in a brief use of clean playing.
Vanitas played a musical style that took black, sludge, doom metal, hardcore and screamo and mixed them together to create a sound of their own. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and angry themes.
In my opinion Vanitas where a very great sounding mixture of black, doom, sludge metal and hardcore and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Memento Mori"and "High Gardens".8 out of 10.
