Sagenland are a band from the Netherlands that plays a folk inspired form of black metal and this is a review of their album "Oale groond" which will be released in 2021 by Heidens Hart.
Firewood burning sounds and folk instruments start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilized a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style and the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched sounding black metal screams.
Bass guitar leads can also be heard in some parts of the recording while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. Acoustic guitars and pagan style choirs can also be heard on some of the tracks along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with a couple of brief interludes also being utilized before returning back to a heavier direction as well as one of the tracks also introducing clean vocals onto the recording and the songs also add in a decent mixture of both old school and modern influences. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in the band members local dialect and describe sagas and poetry from the countryside.
In my opinion Sagenland are a very great sounding folk influenced black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "De jammerklachten van Singraven -eerste deel" "Bladval" and "'t Leste gedicht (Twentse earde)'. 8 out of 10.
