This is a review of a split album between Germany's Pestheim and Modgudr called "Hymns From The Eternal Kingdom" which was released in 2019 by Wolfmond Production and we will start off the review with Pestheim a solo project that plays a very raw, old school and pagan pagan form of black metal.
His side of the split starts out with a very dark and heavy sound along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams a few seconds later. Most of his music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave era while spoken word parts can also be heard briefly and melodies are also added into some of the riffing.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the tremolo picking also giving the music more of a raw feeling. Epic sounding synths are also added onto one of the tracks as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very chaotic style and the closing track track spoken word parts and battles can also be heard. The production sounds very dark, raw and old school while the lyrics cover Paganism, Medieval and nature themes.
In my opinion Pestheim are a very great sounding raw and old school pagan black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hateful Manifesto" and "Nordic Kingdom".
Next up is Modgudr a duo that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal.
Their side of the split starts off with a very heavy 90's style while the vocals are in between demonic sounding growls and grim black metal screams. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet old school style as well as adding in a brief use of spoken word parts and clean vocals. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness and nature themes.
In my opinion Modgudr are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "My Eternal Kingdom" and "The Ancient Days of Glory".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of raw, old school and pagan black metal. 8 out of 10.
