Luctum are a band from Portland, Oregon that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Ashes of the Titans" which was released by Morbid Chapel Records.
Dark yet melodic riffing starts off the album along with some drum beats a few seconds later while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the music also having its atmospheric moments as well as the guitar solos and leads being done in a very dark yet melodic style.
Keyboards can also be heard on some of the tracks and the music also adds in a decent mixture of both old school and modern influences along with one of the songs being an instrumental as well as some clean playing and whispered voices also being added on the closing track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness, mythology and occultism themes.
In my opinion Luctum are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Neglect" and "Feeding On the Flesh Of Memory". 8 out of 10.
