Defleshing A God Interview

For those who have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Bestiam "During the last summer, I received a message on a metal website through the ads section in search of musicians, from my drummer Haborym, who was looking for folks for a new project he made. He was still in touch with Obtorto, on the bass. Albeit I was busy with many other bands, it was an interesting proposal. They found Mestor on the guitar too, who quit after a bit. Rather of wasting time with other stupid shit, Duke Valefor took his place after I got in touch with him".

Obtorto "Haborym put an ad looking for people to form a band and got in touch with Mestor and Bestiam. In the same period I also put an ad online and later got in touch with Mestor, who told me about the project. I started composing with Haborym and after a very short period of time Mestor left the band. We immediately recruited Duke, began rehearsing and writing our demo "Cenotapharium".

Haborym "This music project was born from my desire to start playing again after years of inactivity. During the summer of 2022, I got in touch a guitarist named Mestor, who, after leaving the band, was replaced by Duke Valefor. Bestiam is our vocalist, and Obtorto is the bassist and also the producer of our first demo, "Cenotapharium".

Duke Valefor "While I was involved in another band, I got messages from Bestiam and Haborym to join this other project, which is more focused on black metal. From there, we immediately became active and certain of the path to move on, which is simple and direct black metal".

Bestiam "Hegal was black metal too, Duke!".

So far you have released a demo, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for, on the recording?

Bestiam "Harsh black metal, made by Obtorto at his Misunderstudio. The deed was, is, and forever will be, black metal only, fast and raw as for the riffs as for the lyrics. I don't usual listen to my bands' stuff after one listening anymore, I try to forget what I've done because I'm too involved in what I do! You know, it's a sort of a psycho-mood, you recognize your voice and your style, things like that! Looking forward!".

Obtorto "During the writing process we didn't have a specific style or band to be inspired to, but we never wanted to cross the boundaries of classic black metal excessively".

Haborym "Our musical style is clearly rooted in the origins of black metal, with some thrash influences. For the recording, we wanted to maintain an old-school style with the right amount of rawness in the sound, without risking in overdoing it".

Duke Valefor "We're mainly inspired by the great classics of the early '80s/'90s with a slight thrash influence from my part".

Bestiam "Slight? Only? You're a thrasher more than a blackster!".

A lot of your lyrics follow Satanism and Anti-Christianity themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Bestiam "It came by its own, all alone, though about the lyrics, they could be various and not only dedicated about Satanism only or whatsoever. I tried to avoid from the very first beginning, things like improbable nowadays Latinish wrong shit that inflates the scene!".

Obtorto "I cannot talk on behalf of Bestiam who writes the lyrics, but as far as I'm concerned, I do not tolerate the hypocrisy of the Church and its fairytale".

Haborym " I can say, at least from my perspective, that the interest in the dark arts is purely artistic. From my point of view, darkness and everything that revolves around it is highly inspiring".

Duke Valefor "My point of view is purely atheist, although I sympathize with Satanic philosophies, but I prefer not to delve into it".

What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far within the music?

Bestiam "The title track, that was our first moniker changed because too similar with a band from Turkey, it's about death and the coldness of the tomb and kindred. The rest is very similar, so no upsets in the family. Of the four, I prefer "Gestatorial..." for its uniqueness, I wrote like Stan seemed to be an evil pope. When I sing 'My bed wrapped with Turkish silk linens

Precious worth's more than all your lives' it's clear the image you all have before your eyes! if no one dies on what the fuck do I write the lyrics?".

Duke Valefor "We haven't discussed it yet, but from my perspective, we could incorporate concepts about anti-human or space-related themes".

What is the meaning and the inspiration behind the name Defleshing A God?

Bestiam "It was just the title of some lyrics I had, ready for use! Sounds good for a concept of peeling divine flesh through a sickle!".

Obrorto "It represents anger and violence against any god or religion but can also have a deeper meaning if you like to find a philosophical nature in it".

Duke Valefor "Since I joined an already formed band, I refer to the words of the other members, which represent disdain against any god or religion; being more reflective, that can also have a deeper meaning".

Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork shown on the cover?

Haborym "As the title suggests, it represents the cenotaph, a monument erected in memory of the dead".

Bestiam "A mausoleum during winter rain under a cloudy sky".

Obrorto " The artwork is just a badass representation of a cenotaph".

Bestiam "And don't forget that it was made with a free AI fucking program too by ourselves, with the skill of Duke Valefor through Photoshop!".

Duke Valefor "It represents an infernal setting of a cenotaph; I think it reflects the topics addressed in the lyrics very well".

Has the band done any live shows and are you open to the idea?

Bestiam "Not yet, but we'll hit some stage one day!".

Obtorto "We are still having tons of rehearsals in order to play our best live show every time".

Haborym " As for today, no live performances, but we are working to start as soon as possible".

Duke Valefor "We have never performed live concerts, although we would like to do so in the near future, maybe to promote new material".

Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Haborym "Obviously, we are still searching; it has been only a short time since the release of our first demo, but we are confident".

Bestiam "None of the above, only the first is real but not easy to achieve so far".

Obtorto "Although things could get interesting with the addition of future live shows we are not signed with any label".

Duke Valefor "We are open to proposals. It's still early since we released our first demo on various social platforms, but we have produced physical copies that we can send to some record labels".

On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Bestiam "Not bad, so far for being a demo, but not worldwide yet, please! We don't have fans!".

Haborym "It's still early to say, but the feedback we are receiving is positive, and that gives us the right motivation to continue on this path".

Obtorto "Being our first demo, we couldn't reach huge numbers in less than a month, but we are very satisfied with the reaction of the listeners so far".

Duke Valefor " It would be great to achieve worldwide success, but currently, we had only a little feedback. We are confident that it will appeal to the true connoisseurs of the genre, allowing us to get noticed without disappointing fans who seek a raw and powerful sound".

Can we expect a full-length and also do you see the band heading where in the next future?

Haborym "We are continuing with the songwriting, and when we feel satisfied with our work, the full album will come. The direction we will follow aligns with our musical ideals; we have good cohesion, and that gives us the right push".

Bestiam "Oh well I don't know, you must ask it to the others. My lyrics are ready, but for an album I mean, it's gonna be slow as I can see! Without haste, we crank it up! Gimmick!".

Obtorto "We have just started composing new material for a full length. We want to keep this profile but also adding new patterns and sections to give depth to the tracks".

Duke Valefor "Personally, I aim to release a full album within one year, as we already have quite a bit of material. We will try to maintain a raw and yet detailed black metal style, avoiding excessive repetitiveness. I must admit that I draw inspiration from pioneering bands in the genre that have shaped its evolution over the years".

Which bands or musical styles have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening nowadays?

Bestiam "If we compare those in the scene who has 50 year old now, for example Morgan of Marduk well, he is still a master of guitar and black metal riffs. The force of habit those people may have after 30 years if black metal, experience it's like more to be, a lifestyle! habit. How many navigate people you know in the metal scene? If you give a guitar in the hands of Tony Iommi (for that he has 2 real fingers and 3 prothesis on the phalanx) he is still a professional. Such people can do and play whatever they like! You could hear music in his riffs, even if it is shitty stuff because it's his job, you know what I mean? And oh... Well... The top for me is fuckin' Slayer! I usually listen to Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Toto, Uzeb, Sting, Wasp, Fifth Angel, Ratt,  The Police, Queen, Alien Vampires, Hocico, VNV Nation, Urban Knights etc. so nothing close to metal anyway. Naturally! In Italy the best was Aborym with their demos and the first album "Kali Yuga Bizarre", Forgotten Tomb, Satanel, Handful Of Hate, Kvlt, Gosforth with Ad Hominen. For whom inspired me, I must list Venom and Marduk because they represent each a category, the 80's, the 90's and the Noughties. Even for Bathory and Celtic Frost which came for first with brilliant albums, then early Sepultura and Sodom! I never partook for Norwegians or Swedish, even for me the latter is always at their finest since the very first day! Just see "Blood Of The Funeral" artwork and videoclip from latest Marduk opus, they borne the test of time, still being an urderground classy outfit within Century Media colossus marketing coils!".

Obtorto "FWOBM for sure, Italian legends Death SS, Bulldozer and Mortuary Drape. Also Scandinavian black metal, Mercyful Fate, some punk, post punk and dark wave".

Haborym " I don't have a specific band for inspiration, but as mentioned before, our style is old-school black metal to which we refer. As a listener of the genre, I'm connected with bands from the first and the second wave of black metal, and I don't disdain death metal and thrash either".

Duke Valefor "Each of us have different preferences, but we all converge on classic black metal. I look to reference bands like Morbid, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Marduk, Burzum etc. Influences come from various corners of extreme metal, although we try to blend them well for the listeners' ears. Lately, I've been listening to newly emerging artists like us, who play the same genre, to better understand its evolution in all its faces".

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Obtorto "I would like to thank you for this interview and say fuck off to every person I played with who preferred wasting their life instead of this".

Haborym "The project Defleshing A God was born from passion and the desire to express ourselves, and we will always try to convey all our dedication and eagerness in every second of each of our songs".

Duke Valefor "Thank you for allowing us to express ourselves. A personal thought I can leave you with: if you start with metal, carry the passion with you to the grave; people who start the journey and then give up can go to hell! And now, listen to our damn demo!".

Bestiam "Stay beastly! Stay Satan! Fuck you! Backfires! A new wave of Covid-19 will blow you away! All the empires and dictatorships shall fall! I hate everyone, all and everything! Peste vi colga! I am not passing thru! Kaputt! Keep the flame alive, may the torch burn your house and rapes your women!".
