Stygian Love are a solo project from Belgium that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays an atmospheric and depressive mixture of post black emtal, blackgaze and doom metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "Ghost Light" which will be released in August as a joint effort between Fiadh Productions and Vita Detestabilis.
A very heavy and atmospheric sound starts off the album while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic post metal style. Clean playing can also be heard on a lot of tracks along with the music also adding in a lot of shoegaze touches and synths are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the songs.
Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams while the faster sections of the songs also add in a lot of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Elements of doom metal are also added into the slower sections of the songs along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody as well as one track also adding in a brief use of nature sounds, acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly and one song is also an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover depression and loneliness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Stygian Love and if you are a fan of atmospheric and depressive post black metal, blackgaze and doom metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Touch Of Light" "Haunting Serenity" and "Our Spirits Join". 8 out of 10.
