Iōhannēs are a solo project from North Carolina that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording plays a very progressive form of black metal and this is a review of their 2023 ep "Vindicta Hominis" which will be released in August by Syrup Moose Records.
Clean playing starts off the ep while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. At times the music gets very progressive sounding while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the music more of a raw feeling. Death metal growls can also be heard at times along with the songs also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the riffs also bringing in a small amount of melody.
On this recording Iōhannēs remains true to the progressive style of black emtal that he has established on previous releases. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album and cover a man who makes a pact with a vengeful moon goddess to seek revenge upon those who have wronged him.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Iōhannēs and if you are a fan of progressive black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Lament And Revenge" and "Vow of Destruction". 8 out of 10.
