Chaos Altar are a solo project from France that plays a very raw and old school from of black metal and this is a review of his 2023 ep "Where The Ashes Now Reign" which will be released on July 28th by Void Wanderer Productions.
Fire burning sounds and winds start off the ep before going into a heavier direction while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. Melodies are also added into a lot of t he guitar riffing along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. The music is also very heavily rooted in the mid 90's era.
One track also adds in a brief use of clean playing along with some clear vocals and spoken word parts also being utilized briefly as well as one song also adding in a small amount of keyboards and the bonus track is also a Slayer cover. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover Chaos, Death and Human Hatred themes.
In my opinion Chaos Altar are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Furnace" and "I Am Nothing". 8 out of 10.
