Kato are a solo project from Connecticut that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording goes for more of a psychedelic form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2023 ep "Abyss".
A very dark, heavy and melodic sound starts off the ep while all of the tracks are also very long and epic in length. At times the music also gets very psychedelic sounding along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. The solos and leads are also done in a very dark yet melodic style along with the music also having its atmospheric moments, synths can also be heard at times and the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, spoken words and growls can also be heard briefly.
On this recording Kato takes his music into more of an atmospheric, aggressive and psychedelic style of black metal, The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover abyss and despair themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Kato and if you are a fan of aggressive psychedelic black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE 'Stare" and "Ruin". 8 out of 10.
