Oakland, California's Sutekh Hexen have returned with a new recording which continues the raw black metal, ambient, industrial and harsh noise mixture of previous releases and this is a review of their self titled 2019 album which will be released on March 29th as a joint effort by Cyclic Law and Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Distorted guitar drones and ambient style synths start off the album along with some demented yet high pitched black metal screams a few seconds later. A great amount of programmed beats can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and they also add in elements of industrial.
Slow yet heavy guitar riffing starts becoming a very huge part of the recording on the second track. At times the music also gets very experimental and avant garde sounding while also adding in elements of harsh noise into some parts of the music as well as adding in some raw tremolo picked riffs and a later track also shows the music also going into a faster direction and adding in some blast beats on a couple of later songs.
All of the tracks sound very different from each other while some of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with some of the songs being instrumentals. As the album progresses a brief use of acoustic guitars can also be heard in some parts of the music along with some whispered vocals and clean playing also being used on later songs, one track also adds in a small amount of melodic riffing. The production sounds very dark, raw, and lo-fi while the lyrics cover mysticism, demons and witchcraft themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Sutekh Hexen and if you are a fan of raw black metal, ambient , industrial and noise, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Eye of The Quill" "SubStratus" and "Torrential". 8 out of 10.
