Pale Misery are a band from Louisiana that plays a mixture of black metal and crust with a touch of drone and doom metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 ep "Black Candles And Gutter Scum" which will be released in may.
Atmospheric sounding drones start off the ep while spoken word parts can also be heard briefly before going into a heavier musical direction. Elements of crust and d beat can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal/crust screams while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Blast beats can also be heard during the faster sections of the songs along with the slower sections of the music bringing in elements of doom metal and when guitar leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic style.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the music more of a raw second wave black metal feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and as the ep progresses drones and spoken word parts also make a return in certain sections of the recording while also adding in a small amount of synths and acoustic guitars are added briefly on the closing track. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover angry themes.
In my opinion Pale Misery are a very great sounding mixture of black metal and crust with some touches of drone and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Devoured" and "The Only Cure". 8 out of 10.
