L'Acephale are a band from Portland, Oregon that plays a style of black emtal that also incorporates elements of ritual, dark ambient, avant garde. folk, spoken word and martial and this is a review of their 2019 self titled 2019 album which will be released in April by Eisenwald.
Ambient orientated soundscapes start off the album along with some spoken word parts a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. A great amount of melody can also be heard in the guitar riffing along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them.
When tremolo picking and blast beats are utilized during the faster sections of the songs it gives the music more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style.
All of the tracks are very long and epic in length while acoustic guitars can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and they also bring in elements of neo folk. Clean male vocals are also added into some parts of the music along with a great amount of high pitched black metal screams also being utilized quite a bit throughout the recording.
One track also introduces female vocals onto the recording while some songs also add in martial elements as well as getting very experimental, ritualistic and avant garde at times along with some tracks also adding in keyboards. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover literature. historical themes and the philosophy of Georges Bataile.
In my opinion L'Acephale are a very great sounding avant garde black metal band and if you are looking for something that is very original, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sovereignty" "Hark! The Battle-Cry Is Ringing" and "Winternacht". 8 out of 10.
