Arstidir Lifsins are an international band with members from Iceland and Germany that plays a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Saga a tveim tungum I: Vapn ok vidr" which will be released in April by Van Records.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams which also get very deep at times as well as having their semi melodic moments along with some spoken word parts being added into certain sections of the recording.
The riffs also add in a great amount of melody while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with some tracks also adding in nature sounds and classical guitars and stringed instruments which also introduce elements of folk music onto the album.
When clean vocals and choirs are utilized they also give the music more of a pagan feeling while a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the music also getting very atmospheric at times, whispered vocals can also be heard in some parts of the music and all of the instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Old Icelandic and cover the brutal power attempts of infamous Norwegian king Olafr helgi Haraldsson in the 11th century.
In my opinion Arstifir Lifsins are a very great sounding pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fornjóts synir ljótir at Haddingja lands lynláðum" "Líf á milli hveinandi bloðkerta" "Vandar jǫtunn reisti fiska upp af vǫtnum" and "Haldi oss frá eldi, eilífr skapa deilir". 8/5 out of 10.
