Volkolun are an international duo with members from Russia and Poland that has been featured before in this zine and plays black metal with some elements of ambient and folk music and this is a review of their 2019 ep "Path Through The Mist" which was released as a joint effort between Crush The Desert Records and Werewolf Promotion.
Nature orientated soundscapes start off the album along with some ambient style synths and clean playing a few seconds later while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and after the intro the music goes into a heavier direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and the music is heavily rooted in the Eastern European style.
Folk instruments are also added into some parts of the music while the riffs also use a great amount of melody. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic and atmospheric style along with most of the tracks being long and epic in length and when the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can also be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them and you can also hear some mid 90's influences in the bands musical style. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Nature and Polish Folklore themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Volkolun and if you are a fan of black metal with some elements of ambient and folk music, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wayfarer" and "Her majesty". 8/5 out of 10.
