Sainte Marie des Loups are a solo project from France that plays a very raw, aggressive, sepulchral and melodic form of black metal and this is a review of his self titled 2018 album which will be re-issued in May by Amor Fati Productions.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very raw and melodic style while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the riffs also use a decent amount of dark sounding melodies. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with the music also adding in a decent mixture of both old school and modern influences.
One of the tracks is long and epic in length and as the album progresses a brief use of clean vocals can also be heard. One track also introduces synths and clean playing onto the recording and the album also closes with an instrumental track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover dark and blasphemous themes.
In my opinion Sainte Marie des Loups are a very great sounding raw, aggressive, sepulchral and melodic black metal solo project and if you are of fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "La Fin de I'Hiver" and "Insolence". 8 out of 10.
