Wishfield are a band from Minnesota that plays a mixture of atmospheric black metal and shoegaze and this is a review of their self titled 2019 album which was released by Sound Of The Northwoods.
A very distorted guitar sound starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals bring in a mixture of both high pitched black metal screams and clean playing along with the music also mixing in a great amount of shoegaze and post rock elements.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic style along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and clean playing can also be heard at times.
A couple of the tracks is an instrumental while the music also captures an improv atmosphere at times along the closing song being very long and epic in length and the music also adds in some college and indie rock elements. The production sounds very raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover real life themes.
In my opinion Wishfield are a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric black metal, post rock and shoegaze and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Something" "Nothing" and "Isolated People In Isolated Rooms". 8 out of 10.
