Verminous Serpent are a band f rom Ireland with members from Slidhr, Malthusian and Primordial that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "The Malign Covenant" which will be released in march by Amor Fati Productions.
Dark soundscapes and synths start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also h ear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of t he musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain true to an old school style along with the riffs also adding in a good amount of melody.
Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the ancient era of the genre along with some of the deeper vocals also adding in a bestial touch at times. Clear singing can also b e heard briefly along with the music also showing some influences of the modern era at times. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover darkness and occultism themes.
In my opinion Verminous Serpent are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Seraphim Falls" and "Deaths Head mantra". 8 out of 10.
