Defixiones are a 1 man band from Italy that plays a very dark, raw and primitive form of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2012 cassette "Harmonices Inferni" which was released by Naturmacht Productions.
Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with only a small amount of fast playing and semi blast beats being used on one song, while the synths bring a very atmospheric, dark and depressive ambient sound to the music and midway through the album they dominate with the music going into a more dark ambient direction while still keeping the black metal elements in addition the last song utilizes some experimental noise elements, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.
Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced ambient black metal riffs that are very dark, raw and primitive sounding with some melodies being thrown into the riffing at times in addition the songs are very long and epic in length, while the lead guitars are very distorted and melodic sounding depressive black metal leads that do not really turn into solos, as for the acoustic guitars they are only used brief and use finger picking to enhance the darkness that is coming out of the guitars.
Vocals range from mid range to high pitched distorted black metal screams with some spoken word parts being thrown into the music at times as well as some whispers and dark demonic growls being used on one song, while the lyrics cover dark, depressive and Celtic Pagan themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.
In my opinion Defixiones are a very great sounding hybrid of dark ambient and depressive black metal and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Yeller" and "Triadic Cult Of Morrigan". RECOMMENDED BUY.
