Domgard are a band from Sweden that plays a very raw, epic and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Odelagt" which will be released in December by Carnal Records.
Nature sounds and drones start off the album along with some atmospheric sounding synths before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats along with the riffs also bringing in a great amount of dark sounding melodies.
Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched screams while synths are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the music at times along with the songs also bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion, a lot of the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave style.
Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length while all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them and when spoken word parts are utilized they give the music more of a ritualistic feeling along with some of the riffing adding in a small amount of thrash influences and a couple of the tracks also introduces melodic pagan chants and vocals onto the recording and as the album progresses clean playing can also being heard on some of the tracks and they close the album with an ambient instrumental.
Domgard plays a style of black metal that is very raw, old school, epic and melodic sounding, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover Anti Cosmic and Dark Germanic Heathenism themes.
In my opinion Domgard are very great sounding raw, epic and atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Svartdjupets Lockelse" "Aldar Rokkr" Odelagt" and "Forganent". 8/5 out of 10.
