Sleepwalker are a band from Japan that plays an abstract, improvisational and experimental form of psychedelic black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "5772" which was re-issued in 2017 as a joint effort between Sentient Ruin laboratories and AnnapurnA.
A very heavy and avant garde sound starts off the album along with some clean vocals and spoken word parts while t he riffs also bring in a decent amount of melody along with the vocals also adding in a decent amount of black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
During the faster sections of the songs the riffs also bring in a decent amount of tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling while the songs also bring in a great amount of noise rock elements as well as adding in influences of psychedelia, free jazz, improv, drone and krautrock.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and when guitar leads a re utilized they are done in a very distorted yet melodic fashion, when whispers are utilized they give the songs a more evil atmosphere.
Sleepwalker plays a musical style that mixes raw black metal, noise rock, krautrock, psychedelic, experimental, improv, drone, tribal ritualism and free jazz to create something very original, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Sleepwalker are a very great sounding abstract, improvisational, experimental and psychedelic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Plain Wood" and "Only Stones". 8 out of 10.
