Earthen Shrine are a band from the United Kingdom that plays a mixture of folk, shoegaze, ambient and atmospheric black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "IIos" which was re-issued in 2017 by Anthrazit Records.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars that also add in a touch of folk music and they also mix in with the heavier sections of the music at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the songs also bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the songs also bring in elements of post rock and shoegaze and most of the music is instrumental but as the album progresses melodic vocals and depressive black metal screams can be heard on some of the tracks as well as a brief use of tribal beats.
Earthen Shrine plays a style of atmospheric black metal that is mostly instrumental while the post rock, shoegaze, ambient and folk music elements gives the songs more originality and the production sounds very professional.
In my opinion Earthen Shrine are a very great sounding mixture of folk, shoegaze, ambient and atmospheric black metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "To Where We Never Grow Old" "The Old Man Of The Coniston Water" and "A Walk To Our Death Together, Beneath A Veil Of Weeping Willows". 8 out of 10.
