United Kingdom's solo project And Now The Owls Are Smiling has returned with a new recording which continues the atmospheric and depressive style of black metal from his previous releases and this is a review of his 2022 album "Epitaph" which will be released in September by Clobber Records.
Dark soundscapes start off the album before going into a heavier direction while keyboards can also be heard at times. Vocals are mostly high pitched yet depressive black metal screams along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody as well as the music also having its atmospheric moments.
Clear vocals can also b e heard in certain sections of the recording while spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with most of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and one song also introduces clean playing onto the recording.
Female vocals can also be heard briefly along with nature sounds, field recordings and whispers also being utilized briefly. One of the songs also adds in a small amount of acoustic guitars as well as a later track also adding in a brief use of growls and a alter song is also an instrumental, all of the music sticks to a slower direction and the recording closes with a cover of Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)". The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover depression, existence, coldness and suicide themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from And Now the Owls Are Smiling and if you are a fan of atmospheric and depressive black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Every Day Another Piece Of Me Is Removed" "Winter's Elegy part II" and "There Is No Laughter her". 8 out of 10.
