Black Grail are a band from Chile that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2022 ep "VIIII" which will be released in September by Iron Bonehead Productions.
Bass guitars start off the ep while also introducing clean playing onto the recording which also returns on later songs before going into a heavier direction. Clear chants and spoken word parts can also be heard on one of the tracks along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams that also add in some depressive touches at times as well as having their more deep and grim moments. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the solos and leads also bringing a more dissonant touch to the recording and going into a more chaotic direction as the ep progresses.
The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one track also being a synth orientated instrumental which also gives the recording more of a ritualistic atmosphere, when tremolo picking is utilized they also give the music more of a raw feeling. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Spanish and cover Satanism, Occultism and Death themes.
In my opinion Black Grail are a very great and original sounding occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Encarcelado y Condenado" and "Transmigracion del Alma". 8 out of 10.
