Voak are a duo from Greece that plays a very progressive and anti fascist from of black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Verdrängung" which will be released in September by I, Vopidhanger Records.
Avant garde style keyboards start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
Clear vocals and chants can also be heard on a few tracks while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the mid tempo riffing also adding in elements of new wave and post punk.
violins can also be heard briefly as well as the vocals also adding in some shouts on later songs along with one song also introducing spoken word samples onto the album, the music also has its progressive moments and female vocals can also be heard on a later song. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Germán and cover oppression, racial tension, sexual discrimination and extremisms of all kinds.
In my opinion Voak are a very great sounding progressive and anti fascist black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fur jede Wunde ein Pfeil" "Die Verwandlung" "Affektintoleranz" and "Sabbat". 8 out of 10.
