Oculum Dei are a band from North Carolina that plays a mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "Dreams Of Desire And Torment" which will be released in February.
Spoken word samples start off the album which explain the creation of hell before going into a heavier direction. A great amount of death metal elements can be heard in the guitar riffing and growls while the vocals also bring in a great amount of high pitched black metal screams.
Dark sounding melodies can also be heard in a lot of the guitar riffing while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic and old school style. Acoustic guitars can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with some of the tracks being long and epic in length and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can also be heard
The songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. One song also introduces Gregorian chants onto the recording which also gives the music more of a ritualistic feeling and when tremolo picking is also utilized it gives the songs more of a raw edge and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them, keyboards, stringed instruments and operatic female vocals are also used on the closing track. The production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover anti religion and darkness themes.
In my opinion Oculum Dei are a very great sounding mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ghost In The Corridors" "Dreams Of Desire And Torment" and "A Mist Of Heaven outside Of hell". 8 out of 10.
