Pyrphoros are a band from Germany that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2019 compilation which will be released in February by Into Dungeons Records and consists of their 2011 and 2017 demo's.
A very fast and raw musical sound starts off the compilation along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams while the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's style. When solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very chaotic style.
All of the tracks on the compilation are very long and epic in length as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. One track also brings in a small amount of semi clean playing while spoken word parts can also be heard briefly as well as a small amount of fire burning and at times the music also captures an improv atmosphere.
The song on the second demo starts out with a very distorted amp sound before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also follows the route of the previous demo with the old school style of black metal as well as the vocals also getting more angry on this recording and towards the end a small amount of acoustic guitars can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyric cover dark themes.
In my opinion Pyrphoros are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Conflagaration". 8 out of 10.
